Hello Everone:
We are proud to announce the celebration of our 20th season in Ashburn.
“Comments from the Commish” is a new feature at FSBL. I will be sending out comments, from time to time, about the league or issues that concern all of us. This is a two way street and I would love to hear from you as well. And not just the complaints but also tell me what you like about the league. So take the time to read my comments and don’t hesitate to share your comments with me.
My name is Craig Newman and I am the Farmwell Station Basketball League (aka. FSBL) Commissioner.
I have served as your commissioner for the last thirteen (13) years. I also hold the unique honor of being the one and only coach who has coached in the FSBL for the entire twenty (20) years.
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to FSBL.
FSBL is one of many youth basketball programs centered in and around the Middle Schools in Loudoun County.
The FSBL is an independent Virginia Corporation granted 501(3)c tax exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service. FSBL serves the youth in the Farmwell Station and Broad Run districts. FSBL operates in coordination with the Loudoun County Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services (aka PRCS) who provides facility and support services.
FSBL has one of the most stable programs in the county due in part to the longevity of the BoD members. The current core of Commissioner and Deputy Commissioners have been in place for five (5) years.
The objective of the FSBL is to provide basketball recreation and skills instruction within a competitive environment for all players. We endorse good sportsmanship and respect for each other, coaches, spectators and officials.
FSBL offers the following programs:
House league. This program is primarily open to all boys and girls in the third (3rd) grade through the eight (8th) grade in the Farmwell Station district. In addition, players outside the Farmwell Station district are also permitted to participate as long as space permits. We especially welcome players who might get “closed out” or register late for their local leagues
Travel League. This program is exclusively offered only to those boys and girls in Middle School grades six (6) through eight (8) who attend Farmwell Station Middle School or reside in the Farmwell Station district.
High School House League. This program is primarily open to all boys and girls in the ninth (9th) grade through the twelth (12th) grade in the Broad Run district. In addition players outside the Broad Run district are also permitted to participate as long as space permits. Again, We especially welcome players who might get “closed out” or register late for their local leagues.
AAU. This program is not currently active. However we are looking for someone who is interested in managing our AAU division. It will require someone who is willing to recruit players, form teams, adhere to AAU regulations and FSBL expectations and participate in AAU tournaments. If all this extra volunteer time without pay sounds appealing then we would like to hear from you.
We have a strong core of vendors and enjoy a long term and symbiotic relationship with them. Our vendors provide either products or services that we could not survive without. Our vendors consist of: (presented in alphabetical order) Broad Run High School, Professional Coach Trainers, Cheers Sports, Crown Trophy, Facility Attendants, Farmwell Station Middle School, NYSCA, Olson Photography, Positive Coaching Alliance, PRCS, SimmsShowers Attorney and Updegrove, Combs & McDaniel accountants.
We also have an outstanding core of sponsors who consist of: (presented in alphabetical order) Ashburn Children’s Denistry, Cheers Sports, Crown Trophy, Fitwize4Kids, Family Denistry Ike Lans,DDS, Huntington Learning Center, Olson Photography and White Orthodontics.

We are very proud of our website and we believe it is one of the best sports sites in the county. If you want to learn more about the league, we urge you to attend our General Meeting which will take place on Wednesday, August 27th, 2014 in the cafeteria at Farmwell Station Middle School beginning at 7:00pm.
I know there are some type “A”s out there and I need to fulfill your craving for stats. So here you go.
The primary schools in our district are: Broad Run High School, Farmwell Station Middle School, Ashburn Elementary School, Discovery Elementary School, Dominion Trail Elementary School and Steuart Wellar Elementary School. FSBL enjoys a close working relationship with all our schools.
Last season we had nine-hundred-sixty (960) kids participate in our league. On a per-capita basis (meaning number of participants divided by number of middle schools) we are one of the largest basketball organizations in the county. We had one-hundred-twelve (112) teams consisting of eighty-nine (89) boys teams and twenty-three (23) girls teams. Another way to look at this is we had eighty-four (84) house teams, twenty-four (24) high school teams and four (4) travel teams. We had two-hundred-four (204) coaches. This included one-hundred-twelve (112) head coaches and ninety-two (92) assistant coaches. We operate in six (6) primary schools. We have four (4) Board members who contributed over one-thousand (1,000) hours of their time to manage the league.

Hello Everone:
In my previous comments I shared some things about FSBL.
Now I would like to tell you one of the things FSBL is doing this year.
We are proud to announce the celebration of our 20th season in Ashburn.
In conjunction with our 20th year celebration, we have chosen to recognize the fight against Breast Cancer as our 20th season theme. This year we will be partnering with the Susan G Komen Foundation and conducting some fundraising events to help assist with breast cancer research.
Our registration opens on Monday September 1, 2014. That’s just two days from now.
One of the easiest ways for each of you to participate and to donate to such a worthy cause is through our registration process. During the registration process, you will be given the opportunity to donate on the spot. It is quick and it is easy.
We have established a challenging goal for ourselves of $20,000 in donations.
Last season we had well over 900 players participate in our league.
We are asking everyone to donate at least $20 to help us reach that goal.
For families who are registering more than one child, we ask you to make a flat donation of $25
If you do not have a child in the league but you would like to donate, no worries.
Just go to the FSBL homepage and look for the “DONATE” image in the right hand column.
If you’d like to give more, we will accept donations in larger amounts.
The first 800 individuals to contribute will be eligible for a SGK ribbon button that will identify you as a contributor in the fight against breast cancer.
You will notice a more visible sign of our fight against breast cancer on the sidelines. During the season you will see our coaches sporting pink polo shirts on the sidelines as a reminder to everyone how important it is to get involved in the search for a cure.
Hopefully, we can encourage our coaches to wear their pink shirts proudly out in public on days when they aren't coaching to show their support for the fight against breast cancer.

Why don’t more girls participate in basketball???
The numbers tell the story. In one of my previous comments. I told you last year we had 89 boy’s teams and 23 girl’s teams. That is almost a four to one ratio.
So if girls aren’t playing basketball - what are they doing???
A lot of girls are playing Volleyball and many are playing Soccer. What is it that attracts girls to these sports??? The more appropriate question may be: What is it that steers girls away from basketball???
People generally (and that includes kids) flock to what is easy.
Now before all the soccer and volleyball enthusiasts get excited I am not saying you don’t need certain skills to play those sports but the individual skills required for those sports are easier to master than the ones for basketball.
Aren’t all sports similar? and don’t they all require the same basic skills???
The answer is NO. There are two distinct things that make basketball different.
Baseball, Football, Lacrosse, Soccer and Volleyball all stress the need to keep your eye on the ball. In basketball you are told not to look at the ball and keep your eyes up. It is not easy to dribble, pass and shoot without looking at the basketball. In fact, it’s pretty darn hard.
In most other sports you display dominance with either your right hand or your left hand and in some cases your right leg or your left leg. There may be occasional times when you use your non-dominant hand or leg but it is rare.
In basketball you are expected to be ambidextrous. (equally balanced in using both the right and left hands) You are expected to be able to dribble with either hand, pass with either hand and shoot with either hand. Isn’t that a little too much to expect???
This is what makes basketball the most difficult sport for players to master the individual skills. You are expected to dribble, pass and shoot using both hands equally well (not at the same time) and all this without looking at the ball. OMG - no wonder girls aren’t rushing to play basketball.
If this is so hard then why do four times more boys play the game than girls???
It’s simple. Because boys just spend more time playing basketball and becoming comfortable with it. Girls can achieve the same level of comfort if they are willing to spend the time at it.
Unfortunately, woman’s sports programs don’t get the recognition or the attention they deserve. As a result girls tend to fall into the “typical” girls sports such as soccer, softball, and volleyball. This is really sad. If you would take the time to watch women’s collegiate basketball and the WNBA you would be amazed at the level of play. The women actually execute and demonstrate better basketball skills and team concepts then the men do. No place is this truer than in Storrs, Connecticut.
What is so special about Storrs you ask???
Storrs, Connecticut is home to the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team. In Storrs, the women are queens and sit atop the sports alter. The UCONN women’s basketball program is the best in the nation having won nine national championships. In fact, the women’s team is so good that the men’s team take a distant back seat to the women’s program. And this is even more impressive given the fact that the men’s team has won five national championships themselves. In fact the UCONN basketball program (women’s and men’s) have never lost a championship game. A perfect 14 -0. Twice the women’s and the men’s team have won national championships in the same year. There is no other college than can make these claims. In addition, the UCONN women’s program hold the record for the most consecutive games won (90) by women or men eclipsing the previous record held by the UCLA men's team. The UCONN women’s program have put together three runs of at least 45 consecutive wins and five of their nine championships were undefeated seasons. No other basketball program (men’s or women’s) can make this claim. If you want to talk basketball (women’s or men’s - but especially women’s) it just doesn’t get any better than the UCONN women’s program.
This is FSBL so why am I writing so much about the UCONN program??? Because women do not have a lot of positive sports heroes to aspire to but the UCONN woman’s program is the best.
I have a special admiration for girls who participate in basketball. I love to see the look in the eye of a girl when she masters a particular basketball skill. Since the level of difficulty is high, the feeling with the sense of accomplishment is high. I call it the “Ah Ha” moment when she realizes that she can do a particular skill really well.
So encourage your daughter, niece, cousin or friend to give basketball a chance.
We have three clinics that will take place in September. (The next three consecutive Tuesday’s)
If you have never played basketball before, then this is the perfect opportunity to come and check it out. If you have played before, come out and learn some new skills or just have some fun.
I am not going to tell you basketball is easy to learn …. Because it is not.
It takes a certain kind of girl to come out for basketball and I applaud each and every girl who tries it.
Basketball skills are hard to master and the player has to be willing to invest the time to learn them.
Meet that challenge head on and start your path to UCONN today.
When you master the individual basketball skills you will have a great sense of accomplishment.
Remember to always shoot for the moon and even if you miss, you will still be among the stars.

How is your V.I.C.E. level???
V.I.C.E. is an acronym that stands for: Values, Integrity, Character and Ethics
Values = Everyone has a set of values, however everyone does not have the same set of values
Values are fundamental beliefs, the principals that define that which is right, good and just.
Values are the standards that provide guidance as we determine right from wrong and good from bad.
Values include: honesty, compassion, courage, responsibility and respect.
Integrity = Discerning what is right from wrong, acting on what you have discerned, even at personal cost and then displaying openly that you are acting on your understanding of right from wrong.
Knowing the difference between right and wrong and doing what is right even when no one is watching.
It means to practice what you preach
Character = The combination of qualities or features that distinguish one person from another.
You can have character or you can be a character.
Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation.
Your character is who and what you really are while your reputation is merely what others think you are.
Ethics = Defines our actions and decisions; When you can’t announce what you have done you probably did something wrong.
The refusal to compromise one’s values and follow the crowd for personal gain when you know the actions of the group are wrong.
It is not easy to maintain a high V.I.C.E. level because of all the temptations that will present themselves.
Traveling down the straight and narrow road is darn hard which is why so few people choose the right path.
You have complete control over your V.I.C.E. level. No one can make you have a poor value system or low integrity. Others don’t encourage you to be a character instead of displaying character nor can they make you follow the wrong path.
Only you can choose to employ an undesirable set of values, refuse to recognize right from wrong, concern yourself with reputation instead of character or walk down the wrong path.
So the next time you look in the mirror ask yourself about the person who is looking back at you.
Did I keep my V.I.C E. level high today or did I let temptation and others drag me down the wrong path.
Remember that once you lie - you are a liar.
Once you steal - you are a thief.
Once you break your word - you are untrustworthy.
You cannot undo these things.
It does not matter if you know the words
It does not matter if you know what they mean
It only matters if you live by them
So how is your V.I.C.E. level today???

Sports Integrity
Almost if as on queue the Sports world provided the perfect follow up to my previous comments
The New England Patriots were once again caught with their finger in the cookie jar.
For some reason this team feels the need to cheat in order to win. It is not the first time they have been caught cheating and it probably won’t be the last time we catch them cheating. One of the really sad parts of all this is that we CAUGHT them cheating twice. Who knows how many times they have not been caught.
Clearly this is a team that does not need to cheat and should win most games by just playing the other team straight up.
So why do they continue to cheat???
Are they that insecure or do they just lack confidence in their athletic ability and believe they just can’t win unless they cheat.
I mentioned in my previous comments that everyone has a set of values but everyone does not have the same set of values. It is obvious that the value set the Patriots believe in and follow is one that says cheating is okay.
What has been amazing since the cheating was exposed is the almost unified support from sports casters that this is no big deal. There are no degrees of cheating, lying or stealing. You either violate the integrity of these values or you don’t. I have yet to hear one sports caster say this was wrong. Instead I have listened to two opinions come up over and over again.
One is that this is no big deal. It did not have an impact on the game. What is all the fuss about? The other opinion is that everyone cheats so what’s the big deal.
Cheating is a BIG deal. Whether it had an impact or not is not relevant. The act of cheating is to gain an advantage. Whether you are successful in gaining that advantage is irrelevant. Cheating is wrong and when caught it should result in consequences that penalize the guilty party. Further everyone does not cheat. It is affront to those of us who do not cheat to be grouped in with those who do.
As I listened to the sports casters defend the Patriots I began to realize how much sports as a business is lacking in integrity.
It is my opinion that you should keep your ears open and listen to the conversation around the water cooler. People who defend the actions of the Patriots are not just announcing a different opinion but rather they are declaring what their value set is. Once you know what value set one follows you know whether you can trust them or not. If one believes cheating, lying and stealing are okay you have to wonder what other values and ethics they subscribe too.
It is so sad that the sports industry produces bad example after bad example. What has become rare almost nonexistent is hearing about a good example in sports. The last good (positive) example I can remember involved Mone Davis, the phenom female little league pitcher that embraced the worlds heart for a brief period of time. And yet as I recall this heartwarming event I also have remember how some sports people turned this into a negative issue.
Gino Auriemma, coach of the NCAA champions UCONN girls, sent an email to Mone Davis to congratulate her on her accomplishments. This caused a minor stir in the sports world as there were some who accused him of violating recruiting restrictions. Really. He said “well done” to a youth athlete and instead of joining him in praising her some in the sports community were trying to bring action against him.
Is this the true spirit of youth sports???
Sports, most notably youth sports, has the opportunity to display good examples and life lessons especially in the area of team work. However this goodness is overshadowed by the overwhelming practice that winning, at any cost, is all that matters.
The focus and emphasis should be on developing players not trying to find ways to get around the rules to win.
So do you think the Patriots were right or wrong???

Hello Everyone:
We are proud to announce the celebration of our 21st season in Ashburn.
Registration will open early this year beginning at 12:00am on August 1, 2015 so that we will be able to meet the deadline set by PRCS to provide our enrollment numbers to the county. You will also notice that the registration fee has increased from $150 to $160 dollars. We regret the increase but we had to increase the fee to match increased operating costs.
“Comments from the Commish” begins its second season. I will be sending out comments, from time to time, about league rules, proper conduct, hot sports topic and life lessons.
This is a two way communication feature and I would love to hear from you as well. And not just the complaints! Tell me what you like about the league. So take the time to read my comments and don’t hesitate to share your comments with me.

Mack’s Blacktop Basketball – We offer free clinics, on specified Saturdays, during the summer for both boys and girls. These clinics are offered to encourage kids to come out and learn some basketball skills or polish up existing skills. There are still three (3) weekends remaining for these clinics. Lack of Sports Integrity
Last week, two players on the same team got into a disagreement that resulted in one player hitting the other player in the mouth and breaking his jaw. The players involved were Geno Smith and Ikemefuna Ekemkpali. It is quite possible that Geno Smith may never play football again.
The argument was over $600. That’s right ......$600 .....not $6,000 .....or $60,000 ..... but just $600. People who made millions of dollars need not argue over a measly $600. Even if Ekemkpali was not making millions he was making hundreds of thousands of dollars.
One again professional sports provides an example of lack of V.I.C.E
(values, integrity, character, & ethics)
This is my opinion on the issue
Sports figures are of the notion that they can get away with violence. They seldom risk anything since retribution is either insignificant or non-existent. This poor example of improper behavior is presented to our youth almost every day.
When is it okay for one person to hit another???
Only in the act of defending yourself from someone who is inflicting violence upon you.
It is never acceptable to initiate violence.
This story made the news for several days. The first day most people were appalled that one player would hurt another player in that manner. By day two, people began to say it was Geno’s fault. By the third day, people did not even care about the issue any more. As a society have we become so desensitized to violence that it does not mean anything anymore .. of course unless it happens to you personally.
Ekemkpali was not defending himself when he hit Smith. He was being a big bully. This is a man who has a history of being violent (he punched out a policeman). He uses his size and temper to intimidate people. If you do not succumb to his brute size and strength then he resorts to violence to get his way.
He claims that Geno was waving a finger in his face. Since when is waving a finger in someone’s face sufficient provocation to justify breaking a person’s jaw. He should be in jail. Instead less than 24 hours after breaking Geno’s jaw he was picked up by another team. I was appalled by the insensitive actions by the Buffalo Bills, appalled not surprised. Not too surprised when you take into consideration who their coach is. I personally hope the Buffalo Bills go 0-16, it is exactly what they deserve.
This person should have never played another down in football ever. Instead he was rewarded for his violent behavior and almost made into a star. Just when I think the sports world cannot stoop any lower they prove me wrong again. The league seems to be much more concerned about under inflated footballs than a player who inflicts off the field violence on another player.
I was again appalled, not surprised, at the number of sports writers who have suggested that Geno brought this upon himself. That Smith should have known better then to get into an argument with Ekemkpali especially given his past history. Have these people lost their minds? Are they suggesting that you should back down from someone if they are bigger than you??? That is exactly what big brutes like Ekemkpali are relying on.
If I were Geno I would have filed charges against this guy and he would be in jail. Once the criminal trial was over I would proceed with a huge civil action. I have no idea how much money he has but by the time I was finished with him he would have a whole lot less.
I cannot believe that any responsible human being could condone this type of behavior.
Let me conclude with a thought provoking question that will help you determine your V.I.C.E level.
If you condone this type of behavior then what you are saying is that if your child were confronted by a bigger child who had a history of beating up other kids and that if your child waved a finger in the face of the bigger child that it would perfectly okay for the bigger child to break your child’s jaw and you would blame your child for such action???
Is that truly what you believe???
You have to believe that if you condone this type of behavior in any way shape or form.
